Machakos School Introduces Hyena Lessons In Curriculum in the Wake of Rising Scourge
A school located in Kaseveni, Malaa, Machakos County, has incorporated lessons on hyenas into its curriculum to educate students on how to prevent hyena attacks.
During the school’s inauguration on Monday, Chrisphine Oluoch, the school’s administrator, explained that the instruction was crucial due to its vicinity to an area where hyena encounters are common.
Local inhabitants have verified that they’ve faced multiple assaults from wildlife due to their proximity to the Oldonyo Sabuk National Park.
As per the school administrator, a fundamental aspect of the curriculum will involve instructing students on distinguishing between hyenas and dogs.
The administrator verified that the inability to distinguish between the animals was one of the potential factors that might have led to the assault on the young students.
Additionally, students will be taught techniques for preventing attacks and how to respond if they encounter such scenarios.
“We took the initiative after learning that many children could not differentiate between hyenas and dogs to enable them to understand how they look like, how to avoid attacks, and what to do when they face them,” said Oluoch the school administrator.

Parents in the area have praised the effort, expressing relief from the constant worry about their children’s safety during their journeys to and from school.
“Anyone who has lived in this area has a story about a hyena attack on their livestock and also relatives. The animals come in large numbers and some are big and dangerous. We have fought them but it seems they can’t go away. We now have to learn how to live with them,” explained one of the parents.
Hyena assaults have become increasingly prevalent, causing distress among residents in locations like Juja and Rongai, who mourn the loss of life and injuries inflicted by these creatures.
On February 6, there were protests by students from Multimedia University in Rongai following an incident where one of their fellow students was mauled and left severely injured by a hyena.
However, Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) confirmed on Tuesday, April 2nd, that they had successfully captured a hyena in Juja as part of an operation named “Ondoa Fisi”.
