    Maandamaano: Kenya Railways Halts Trains

Kenya Railways Corporation announced on Tuesday, July 18 that train service in Nairobi will be suspended on Wednesday, July 19 due to Azimio’s planned anti-government protests.

The corporation explained in a statement that recent protests led to vandalism and attacks on passenger trains, endangering the lives of those onboard.

Passengers utilizing the trains of the Nairobi Commuter Rail Service between Nairobi Central Station and Lukenya, Syokimau, Embakasi Village, Ruiru, Kahawa West, and Limuru have been urged to find alternative modes of transportation.

In addition, the company has suspended SGR service between Nairobi Terminus and Ngong station.

A portion of the statement read, “We will notify you once normal service is restored and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

The corporation suspended train service between Syokimau and Lukenya on Thursday, July 13, after the train was attacked by suspects.

The incident reportedly occurred at 11 a.m., when suspects throwing stones ambushed the train transporting 502 students.

As a portion of Kenyans prepares for a three-day nationwide protest, the transport industry is on high alert. Some vehicles have been damaged in various incidents.

The Kenya Transporters Association (KTA) warned of disruptions in the matatu sector and urged stakeholders to safeguard their property.

“It is our responsibility to prioritize the safety and security of our drivers, assets, and cargo during these uncertain times,” the statement read in part.

    Three-Day Demonstrations

The opposition, commanded by the former prime minister, has declared the commencement of protests to press their demands.

Among the issues that the opposition wants to be addressed are lowering the cost of living and reforming the electoral commission.
