Luo Council of Elders Divided as Secretary-General Rejects New Leader
After the body’s secretary-general, Adera Osawa rejected the election of former Jaramogi Oginda Odinga aide Odungi Randa as the group’s new leader. The rift within the Luo Council of Elders has become significantly larger.
Mr. Osawa accused Mr. Odinga, who is the leader of the ODM party. Of imposing Mr. Randa on the Luo community. During a ceremony that took place at Homa Bay High School on Saturday. Mr. Randa’s new role as the ninth ker (council leader) was revealed.
This occurred after senior citizens from Siaya, Migori, Homa Bay, and Kisumu. Got together in a closed-door meeting and made the decision to choose him as their leader.
They made their decision after holding a meeting on Friday and Saturday to reach a unanimous decision. Later, Gladys Wanga, James Orengo, and Ochilo Ayacko, along with Mr. Odinga and his wife Ida. Were in attendance at an event where Mr. Randa was crowned as the new Luo Council of Elders Chairman.
In addition, Mombasa Governor Abulswamad Nasir and Luo Members of Parliament were present at the event. That took place at Homa Bay High School. However, it has come to light that there were a few different opinions. Regarding who ought to have been the Ker.
Mr. Osawa argued against the activity, claiming that it went against the wishes of the community’s elders.
According to him, Mr. Odinga’s will—not the wishes of the elders—was taken into consideration. When selecting the new Ker. The passing of Opiyo Otondi in February created a vacancy in the seat. And Mr. Osawa was one of three people who applied for the position.

James Ayaga of Siaya was also a candidate for this position. According to the results of the consensus meeting, he came in second place.
He acknowledged the validity of the findings presented at the meeting of consensus and vowed to collaborate with the new Ker in the capacity of an assistant.
In an act of defiance, Mr. Osawa left Homa Bay and went back to his residence in Mirogi as Mr. Randa was being installed.
He stated that he would not take any action that would be detrimental to the activity. Despite this, he committed to abstaining from any of the group’s endeavors moving forward.
“The election was not based on the census but on the will of one person who dictates everything the elders do,” Mr. Osawa said. “The election was based on the will of one person.”
During the meeting to reach a consensus, certain elders from the counties in Luo Nyanza cast their votes for the three candidates.
Mr. Osawa claims that he received support from both his home county of Migori and the county of Homa Bay, which did not run a candidate for the position.
He went on to say that in Kisumu, he received the same number of votes as Mr. Randal did and that James Ayaga received the same number of votes as he did when the elders of Siaya cast their ballots.
“I guess that makes me the victor,” Mr. Osawa said. He stated to the journalists that the chairmanship of the council was the only position he was interested in holding in the council.

The ongoing struggle for control of the council is very likely to drive a further wedge between the Luo elders. Another faction, which is being led by Nyandiko Ongadi, is already laying claim to leadership of the council.
Mr. Ongadi claims that he has the group’s registration documents and that he ought to be acknowledged as a ker. He has the support of several prominent members of the community as well as various officials in the government.
When Mr. Randa was finally introduced to the general public, there was a little bit of a commotion. Lilian, Otondi’s widow, was the first person to announce that Mr. Randa had been selected as the successor by the elders.
The elders of the community have the responsibility of announcing who wins the Ker. She claims that she received a message from the spirits of Otondi informing her that Mr. Randa should take the helm of the Luo community.
He gave the new Ker a fly whisk that had previously belonged to Otondi. Because some of the elders believed that she had violated some boundaries, others were concerned about whether or not she had acted appropriately.
Following his installation, Mr. Randa made a solemn vow not to participate in corrupt practices and stated that he would not allow himself to be exploited by others to drive a wedge between the Luo people. “I will not engage the enemy who may use the opportunity to drive a wedge between us,” Mr. Randa stated.
