Londiani Junction Tragedy: Over 55 Feared Dead, Others Hospitalised

Friday, June 30, a multiple-vehicle accident occurred at Londiani Junction on the Kericho-Nakuru highway, and it is feared that several people were killed.

According to eyewitnesses, a trailer lost control and collided with Public Service Vehicles (PSV) before rolling into a nearby market, claiming additional lives.

The PSVs were parked on the side of the road at a staging area that also accommodates boda boda drivers.

In response to the incident, the Governor of Kericho Erick Mutai Kipkoech sent a message of condolence to the families of the victims and urged the locals to remain calm.

“We have activated our ambulances and alerted all of our medical facilities,” Mutai assured that the situation was under control and prayed for God’s grace and strength during this difficult time.

Beatrice Kemei, on the other hand, urged the country’s emergency response teams to expedite the rescue effort.

“I send my condolences to families who have lost loved ones and healing prayers to those who have been injured,” Kemei, who was shaken by the tragedy, said.

Before transporting the victims to nearby hospitals, the first responders who rushed to the scene evaluated the victims and administered first aid.

Due to the severity of the collision, some of the victims were thrown into an adjacent ditch, where they piled on top of one another.

Before the publication of this article, the number of those injured and killed had not been disclosed. According to reports, police were dispatched to cordon off the area and direct traffic on the busy highway.

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) disclosed on Thursday, June 29, that 2,124 fatalities occurred between January and June of 2023.

In the first half of 2023, fewer deaths were recorded than during the same period in 2022, when 2,261 deaths were recorded.

NTSA reported that pedestrians led with 729 cases recorded, followed by motorcyclists (561), passengers (403), pillion passengers (196), drivers (189), and pedal cyclists (46).
