Legal Team Abandons Pastor Mackenzie Amidst Threats
On Wednesday, June 14, two attorneys representing controversial pastor Paul Mackenzie requested to recuse themselves from the case, citing grave threats to their safety.
According to reports, attorneys George Kariuki and Elisha Komora claimed that their conscience remained troubled after accepting the case.
In addition, they faulted the state for its difficulty in gaining access to their client before court proceedings.
Mackenzie slept on the floor for more than 60 days, as noted by Mackenzie’s attorney, Kariuki, when he was incarcerated; Kariuki emphasized this. He expressed concern that Mackenzie might pass away before his trial due to the grave circumstances.
The controversial pastor was left with attorney Wycliffe Makasembo, who expressed confidence that he would defend Mackenzie to the bitter end.
He claimed that the government was attempting to obstruct the case’s proceedings.

On the morning of Wednesday, June 14, Mackenzie, his wife Rhodha Mumbua, and sixteen other suspects appeared before the Shanzu Law Courts to determine if their detention period would be extended.
A few, however, collapsed within the courthouse due to their frail bodies. According to Senior Prosecution Council Jami Yamina, sixteen suspects participated in a 10-day hunger strike in support of Pastor Mackenzie.
“We fear that some of them will perish while incarcerated. Ten days ago, the rest of them went on a hunger strike and refused to eat or drink water.
“We must address this issue immediately because we do not know whether these individuals will be alive tomorrow,” Yamina said.
Pastor Mackenzie and his wife went on hunger strike while in custody in response to statements made by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki that the pastor would remain in prison even if the courts released him.
“Mackenzie will not get out of jail. He will grow old in it. We pray that God grants him more years to see the security of Kenya flourish.”
Mackenzie will face the wrath of God upon his release from prison, according to Kindiki.
