Kuppet Urges Teachers to Keep Striking, Ignore Court Orders

On Tuesday, the Employment and Labour Relations Court temporarily halted the national teachers’ strike following a petition by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC).

Justice James Rika issued an injunction restraining the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) and its affiliates from participating in the industrial action, which was set to commence on August 24, 2024.

The court’s orders will remain in place until the case is heard on September 5, 2024.

Despite the court’s suspension of the strike, Kuppet Secretary General Akelo Misori urged striking teachers to disregard the court order and continue with the job boycott.

Misori’s call came just hours after the court’s ruling, which aims to address the impasse created by the teachers’ ongoing strike.

The strike, driven by the teachers’ demands for the government to honor their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), has significantly disrupted learning and posed a threat to upcoming national examinations.

The situation was further complicated by the Treasury’s release of Ksh 13.5 billion for teachers’ salaries, which was intended to alleviate the financial strain on the education sector.

In addition, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) had previously withdrawn their strike notice, opting to give the government more time to address their demands.

KNUT Secretary General Collins Oyuu explained that this decision was made to allow for further negotiations.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos expressed hope that a resolution would be reached through ongoing stakeholder engagement, urging students to continue attending school despite the strike.

As the court awaits further proceedings, the future of the strike and its impact on the education system remains uncertain.
