KRA Issues 7 Tax Advisories for Kenyans Travelling In and Out of Kenya

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has released seven customs taxation directives for Kenyan citizens planning to depart or arrive in the country.

In a notification issued on Friday, the tax authority detailed the steps that Kenyans must adhere to when traveling abroad, including the requirement to declare specific items before leaving the country.

Initially, KRA emphasized the necessity of declaring items meant to be taken back to Kenya during departure. Some of the specifically mentioned items encompass filming gear like cameras, musical instruments, and sports equipment.

Items temporarily exported out of the country for repair, also need to be declared.

“All arriving passengers are required to make declarations using the prescribed Passenger Declaration Form(s) (Form F88).

“Passengers with accompanied luggage are exempted on their used personal items. However, used goods imported for commercial purposes attract taxes,” read the advisory in part.

However, according to the tax authorities, banned items like shisha and fake currency would be confiscated at entry points like airports.

Individuals carrying foreign currency and monetary instruments totaling more than USD 10,000 (equivalent to Ksh1.5 million) are required to declare them at customs both upon arrival and before departure.

“Customs Officers are permitted by the law to examine passenger’s luggage and conduct body searches based on intelligence and profiled security information possessed by Customs officers.

“However, in the process of the body search, the officer will observe high standards of human dignity,” read the statement in part.

Moreover, Kenyan individuals with inquiries related to customs were recommended to interact solely with uniformed Customs Officials situated within the baggage halls.

The tax authority’s guidance arrives during the implementation of customs rules at JKIA, where Kenyan individuals have been asked to make payments for certain items they bring back to Kenya from other countries.
