KNUT Warns JSS Teachers of Contract Termination
The KNUT has cautioned Junior Secondary Teachers (JSS) about the possible cancellation of their employment agreements due to the nationwide protests organized by this group of educators.
Addressing a fundraising event held on December 11, 2023, at Gagra Catholic Church, Collins Oyuu, the Secretary General of KNUT, expressed the union’s desire for teachers to secure permanent and pensionable employment. However, he cautioned that ongoing strikes were impeding advancements.
During his address, Oyuu alleged that the Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) was encouraging or provoking the teachers.
Oyuu cautioned the JSS teachers that if their contracts were terminated, KUPPET wouldn’t come to their rescue.
Oyuu additionally alleged that KUPPET was supporting and financing the gatherings organized by the JSS educators.
In his remarks, Oyuu highlighted the incorrectness of KUPPET’s actions in leading the teachers to engage in protests.
Oyuu additionally mentioned that KNUT is dedicated to engaging in a friendly conversation with the government via the Ministry of Education.

The primary focus of the discussion will be on outlining the steps involved in integrating teachers into long-term, secure contracts that include both permanency and pension benefits.
Over the last 14 days, teachers from JSS have organized protests nationwide.
The teachers have expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s lack of action in updating their contract terms, cautioning that they may not return to their positions in January unless their concerns are dealt with.
Four days later, the Senate called upon the Teachers Services Commission (TSC) regarding accusations of discrimination and the employment of teachers under contractual terms.
“The committee should explain whether these contract-employed teachers are eligible for employment by TSC on permanent and pensionable terms,” nominated Senator Esther Okenyuri stated during the session.
Previously, TSC declared its intention to prolong the contracts of JSS teachers instead of offering them permanent positions with pension benefits.
