KNEC Convenes Crisis Meeting Days After Admitting KCPE 2023 Errors

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has scheduled a crisis meeting for Sunday to address the contentious and erroneous Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) examination results

According to reports, the Council members were notified to attend the meeting at 10:00 am after a sequence of concerns expressed by parents who cast doubt on the reliability of the findings.

At first, KNEC issued a statement elucidating the errors, which encompassed erroneously awarding candidates grades and attributing those grades to subjects in which they had not participated.

Additional errors encompass instances where students from a single institution obtain comparable grades in a single subject, while others receive either exceptionally high or extremely low grades in the same subject.

Numerous academic institutions have composed letters to the Council, urging the organization to investigate the extensive irregularities observed throughout the nation. Moi Kabarak Primary School in Nakuru County requested that KNEC evaluate the institution’s performance in a letter.

“We received the 2023 KCPE results after the communication by the Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Education. However, as a school, we are not satisfied by the results since it does not reflect the ability of the majority of our learners by merit,” the statement read in part.

Dissatisfied candidates expressed concern that the errors could impede their opportunities to gain admission to prestigious secondary institutions across the nation.

“They have killed my dream. I wanted to go to Mary Hill School and the marks I’ve gotten don’t even come close,” a teary candidate spoke to the media.

“I’ve been overwhelmed by a lot of sadness and depression. Since I joined this school, I’ve never gotten such results,” another student lamented.

The meeting was scheduled several hours after KNEC issued a statement in which they ascribed the errors to a configuration error with the SMS code. Students were assured, nonetheless, that the results displayed on the portal were precise by the Council.

In addition, candidates with concerns about the results were instructed by KNEC to file an appeal within thirty days of the date the exam results were made public.
