Kiunjuri Blames DP Rigathi Gachagua for Personal Woes: “You Are The Cause of Your Problems”
Political tensions in the Mt Kenya region escalated on Monday as Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjuri criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, calling him a patronizing activist.
Kiunjuri emphasized the need for mutual respect for unity in the region, responding to comments made during Gachagua’s May 19 visit to Kirinyaga County. During this visit, Gachagua’s entourage condemned Kiunjuri and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro for allegedly causing political divisions.
Accompanied by over 20 elected leaders, Gachagua attended the funeral of his former teacher, Mr. Kano Ndumbi, in Kirinyaga County. These leaders pledged to counter anyone who undermined Gachagua’s authority as the region’s leader. The DP labeled his critics as traitors and collaborators.
Over the weekend, Gachagua accused some of President Ruto’s close associates of arrogance and fostering division in the Mt Kenya region.
In a Kameme TV interview, Kiunjuri claimed Gachagua is the source of his political troubles, citing his condescending behavior and demands for absolute loyalty.
Kiunjuri criticized Gachagua’s approach, stating that calling elected leaders traitors and collaborators while claiming to unite people is contradictory.
Previously, Kiunjuri suggested that if Gachagua is unhappy with the Kenya Kwanza government, he should leave and form his own.
On Monday, Kiunjuri remarked that Gachagua’s assumption that he was being directly addressed was unfounded, possibly indicating a guilty conscience.
Kiunjuri claimed that Gachagua has threatened and demeaned at least 38 elected leaders in the region, excluding them from events and fostering opposition against them to enforce submission.

Kiunjuri accused Gachagua of pretending to unite the region while disparaging those who don’t support him, both with elected and non-elected leaders in tow.
Kiunjuri stated his higher standing within the Kenya Kwanza Alliance, as a principal who signed a coalition agreement, unlike Gachagua.
Kiunjuri criticized Gachagua’s push for the ‘one man, one shilling’ resource allocation formula, suggesting he should seek Cabinet endorsement instead. Kiunjuri highlighted his efforts in Parliament for resource allocation based on population and mentioned President Ruto’s verbal support for his bill.
Kiunjuri reiterated that Ruto had pledged his support for the formula in the presence of Gachagua and other regional leaders, emphasizing that one cannot be both an activist and a Cabinet member simultaneously.
Kiunjuri warned that continued condescension would provoke a strong response from him and his allies.
Kikuyu Council of Elders patron, Mr. Kung’u Muigai, condemned the infighting among regional leaders as disgraceful and lamented that instead of using their significant stake in Ruto’s government for regional benefit, they are embroiled in self-serving conflicts.
