Deputy President Prof. Kithure Kindiki has distanced himself from discussions regarding who holds the dominant political position in the Mt. Kenya region.

This shift comes after Kindiki assumed the role of the countryโ€™s second-highest office less than two months ago, taking over from Rigathi Gachagua, who had been seen by many as a strong contender for the leadership of Mt. Kenyaโ€™s political scene.

The position had also been associated with former President Uhuru Kenyatta, though he recently declared that he no longer has the time or energy to engage in political activities.

In a media roundtable at his Karen residence on Thursday evening, DP Kindiki downplayed the idea of a political kingpin in the region, emphasizing that his sole focus is on fulfilling his duties in the constitutionally assigned office he holds.

When asked by K24 news anchor Joel Chacha whether he now considers himself the uncontested leader of Mt. Kenya, Prof. Kindiki responded with, “Which office is that?”

The Deputy President also addressed the earlier endorsements he received from some Members of Parliament from the Central region, who viewed him as their connection to the Executive while he was still the Interior Cabinet Secretary and Gachagua served as Deputy President.

Kindiki explained that these MPs were expressing frustration due to their deteriorating relationship with Gachagua, and he had no issue with their endorsement, as he was part of the Cabinet where key decisions are made.

However, he clarified that after he is appointed Deputy President, he will now focus on addressing concerns from across the entire nation, not just from his home region.

โ€œAs I recall, these MPs were frustrated because they struggled to push their constituency development agendas due to tensions with the previous occupant of this office. They asked me to represent their concerns to the President, which I saw no problem with since I was part of the Cabinet. But whether they continue to seek my help is up to them,โ€ he said.

Kindiki further stated that while the region where he was born and raised has every right to use his office to advocate for their interests, so do other regions like the Coast, Western, Nyanza, Rift Valley, and North Eastern. He reiterated his confusion over the concept of a political “kingpin,” stressing that no such position exists.
