Kisauni Landslide Tragedy Claims Fourth Victim: Rescue Efforts Persist
The death toll in the Kisauni landslide tragedy in Mombasa county has risen to four after another body was retrieved on Saturday night as rescue operations continue.
On Saturday, first responders recovered a fourth body following the retrieval of three others earlier in the day.
The three individuals identified were John Mungai, a truck driver, along with two truckloaders, Hassan Katana Peter and Japhet Hare.
”We don’t want to leave anyone in doubt. We will continue until everything is done. Unfortunately, we are witnessing disasters in the county but we will overcome them,” the CEC in charge of Roads in Mombasa County Dan Manyala told journalists.
The incident occurred when a quarry collapsed in the Katani area of Kisauni, Mombasa County, trapping six individuals who were digging murram.
Two others are still trapped inside the rubble as rescue operations led by the Mombasa County Fire Service under the supervision of Manyala continue.

In a situation update at 11 p.m., Mr. Manyala communicated that there were slim chances that the remaining bodies would be retrieved.
The County Deputy Director for Infrastructure James Okero stated that they will wait for a report on missing persons before quarry operations are allowed to resume.
Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir arrived at the scene and closed the quarry immediately. The Governor sent a warning to traders across the county warning them against digging quarries without the relevant permits and adhering to the law.
”Our people should understand that working in this kind of queries is unsafe,”
The Governor further urged any other persons conducting similar operations to get the county’s approval to ensure safety.
The quarry landside comes barely two weeks after two people were buried alive after a well they were digging collapsed in the Junda area in Kisauni, Mombasa County.
