Kindiki: Banditry in the Northern Rift Valley has been contained by 70 percent

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki reported that the government has achieved substantial advancements in decreasing instances of banditry and their effects by as much as 70%.

The Cabinet Secretary (CS) talked on the day after Christmas while having a meal with frontline officers stationed at Karanga Joto, situated at the border of Baringo North and Tiaty Sub-Counties within Baringo County.

He was joined by leaders of security agencies at the Regional, County, and Sub-County levels, alongside Unit Field Commanders.

Professor Kithure, who assessed the advancement of new security installations, affirmed that the government is dedicated to eradicating the menace of banditry and intensifying actions to dismantle its political, cultural, and economic connections.

‘…I want to thank you all our officers for living up to your oath of office and diligently facing the criminal elements and bandits, who for years have terrorized innocent residents of Northern Rift Valley and made their lives difficult. There is no greater sacrifice than what you are doing to keep our country safe…’ CS Kithure said.

As per the head of the Interior Ministry, the fight against bandits has achieved a 70% success rate, with the remaining 30% primarily focused on specific areas within Samburu East, Samburu West, Isiolo County, and Turkana County.

“We have covered at least 70% in this war and the remaining 30% in a few parts of Samburu East, Samburu West, Isiolo County, and Turkana County, we are closing in on the criminals hiding there and orchestrating attacks in isolated areas,” he added.

“2024 will be the year of sustaining and upscaling the war on banditry. We will build on the successes and gains of 2023.”

As per the Chief of Security (CS), the upcoming year is poised to be pivotal in combating banditry. Security agencies are dedicated to eliminating banditry to facilitate the Northern Rift Valley Region’s development, economic growth, and the establishment of crucial social infrastructure like schools, medical facilities, and markets.

CS Kithure disclosed plans for the government to allocate a minimum of Ksh.7 billion annually to enhance Kenya’s security capabilities by upgrading the equipment used by security personnel.

“We will be spending at least Ksh.7B every year, to modernize the equipment for our security officers,” he added.

“The first consignment of modern equipment that includes MRAPs, aerial surveillance kits that include drones and personal protective gear is on the way and will be arriving in the country in the next 7 to 10 days…”
