Kimani Ichung’wah Applauds Raila Odinga’s Carpool Advocacy
Kimani Ichung’wah, the leader of the majority in the National Assembly, praised Raila Odinga’s call for Kenyans to carpool to reduce fuel demand on Tuesday, June 27.
In a statement, the majority leader remarked that carpooling would alleviate pressure on the national imports bill, of which fuel is a significant component.
He went on to say that the strategy would eventually stabilize the shilling against the dollar.
Ichung’wah heaped praise on the Azimio regime for steering the conversation toward a positive outlook that would benefit the economy, as opposed to harming the revenue source of President William Ruto’s administration.
“Carpooling is an excellent idea. Reduced fuel demand also alleviates pressure on the national imports bill, of which fuel is a significant component, and could further stabilize the shilling against the dollar.
A stronger shilling is beneficial to the economy. I enjoy this discussion. The topic of discussion has changed,” he stated.

Ichung’wah’s remark was a moderate interpretation of a directive given by Raila to his supporters to harm the state’s efforts to increase revenue sources and finance its budget, which is currently estimated at Ksh3.6 trillion.
The former prime minister, while addressing his supporters at Kamukunji Grounds on June 27th, urged Kenyans to engage in civil disobedience by refusing to pay taxes.
In addition, he urged Kenyans to consider carpooling as a way to reduce fuel consumption.
The opposition leader urged the public to limit non-essential travel to avoid incurring additional expenses. According to Raila, this would prevent the government from collecting taxes.
He urged employers to provide ample time for employees to walk to and from work. In addition, he demanded that matatu owners double their carrying capacity while maintaining the same fares.
In addition, the leader of Azimio urged police officers to support his request by allowing matatus to carry more passengers than permitted. He also instructed Kenyans to obstruct President William Ruto and his government’s movements.
Let us deny the right of way to motorcades. They may activate the sirens at their discretion, but everyone must comply with the directive,” stated Raila.
Government-to-Government Agreement on Fuel
Ichung’wah also noted that the government-to-government oil deal between Kenya and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) was instrumental in preventing a sharp rise in fuel prices.
He speculated that if the Head of State had failed to secure the deal, the price of fuel would be significantly higher than it is currently.
Super petrol costs Ksh182.03 per liter, Diesel costs Ksh167.28 per liter, and kerosene costs Ksh161.48 per liter.
