Kenya’s Reaction to US Clothing Rejection

The Export Processing Zones Authority (EPZA) has initiated a probe into the withdrawal of more than 100,000 sets of denim pants by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

In an announcement, the organization under the Ministry of Trade, led by Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, stated that they had not yet received information regarding the motives behind the withdrawal of the clothing intended for children.

Nevertheless, GossipA2Z.Com discovered that the jeans produced in Kenya were pulled from the market due to defective characteristics that posed risks to children.

Specifically, the autonomous Commission of the United States observed that the clothing items contained metal snaps that had the potential to detach and cause harm to the children.

EPZA stated its dedication to resolving the issues brought up by the US Commission, to allow Kenyan businesses to maintain their export activities.

“We have launched investigations concerning this garment manufacturing issue and in collaboration with the affected stakeholders will share a comprehensive statement upon conclusion of the same,” read the statement in part.

The denim pants were sent to the United States and Canada in September 2022, and the sales process was scheduled for finalization.

The Commission has reported that more than 90,000 pairs of jeans have been sold, and parents are being requested to bring them back to the stores.

Each piece was retailing at an average of Ksh3,600.

โ€œConsumers should immediately take the recalled jeans away from children and return the jeans to any The Childrenโ€™s Place store for a full refund. The Childrenโ€™s Place is notifying all known purchasers,โ€ the body directed.

The jeans produced in Kenya were sent to the United States as part of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) agreement, which facilitated convenient entry into the US market for Kenyan manufacturers.

The production of the jeans was carried out by factories located in Nairobi and Machakos counties.
