Kenya’s Health CS Advises on Required Documents for Upcoming Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) Registration

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has informed Kenyans about the necessary documents for Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) registration.

During a pretest in Marsabit County, she noted that some Kenyans lack essential documents like National IDs and marriage certificates.

For adults without IDs, she urged them to obtain ID cards through the Ministry of Interior, stressing their importance for the upcoming registration starting next week.

She also mentioned that some couples do not have marriage certificates.

She recommended that these couples seek assistance from their chiefs, who can provide letters confirming their marital status.

Marriage certificates will be necessary for those wishing to include their spouses as beneficiaries.

She emphasized, “Married individuals without certificates need to ensure their chiefs are aware of their marriage so they can get confirmation letters.”

She added that the nationwide registration will begin on June 21.

Kenyans can register via their mobile phones, either online or using a USSD code. Those without phones will get help from community health promoters.

Assistant desks will be available at designated health facilities to support those having trouble with self-registration.

She acknowledged that some Kenyans lack phones and assured that community health promoters will assist them in the registration process.

SHIF will launch on July 1, with Kenyans contributing 2.75% of their gross salary to replace the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF).
