Kenya’s Bold Step: Pillars Along Tanzanian Border to Safeguard Against Crisis

Tuesday, June 13th, the Kenyan government announced plans to erect pillars in regions bordering Tanzania to prevent conflict between neighboring communities.

To launch the project, officials from both nations conducted a sensitization exercise to inform the locals of the significance of accurate demarcation.

The government officials, led by Kajiado County Commissioner Felix Watakila, stated that the border pillars would help Kenyans and Tanzanians coexist at the border.

Watakila stated, “We want this project to be sustainable so that every citizen can distinguish between the Kenyan and Tanzanian borders.”

The County Commissioner added that the well-defined border checkpoints would aid in apprehending traders who sneak into the neighboring country to promote illegal enterprises.

During the sensitization exercise, Joseph Mutongoro, a Tanzanian land official, urged Kenya and Tanzania to construct the boundaries openly.

He also urged the cooperation of locals to construct the pillars and provide building materials.

“We must ensure that the project is carried out in a transparent manner involving Kenyan and Tanzanian communities,” Mutongoro insisted.

Officers at the border checkpoint and land surveyors guaranteed that no one would be evicted or relocated while defining the project’s aesthetics. However, those at border crossings would be relocated, while others would receive relocation compensation.

The Anti-Counterfeit Authority (ACA) revealed that the Kenyan government was losing millions due to the sale of uncertified goods, prompting the construction of border pillars.

Officials from the ACA and Tanzania met to discuss the issue and agreed to increase border surveillance.

In addition to encouraging illegal activities, the pillars and clear demarcation would aid in resolving cross-national conflicts such as the recent diplomatic dispute between Kenya and Uganda.

President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda has threatened to deport Kenyans.

Museveni accused Kenyans of smuggling firearms into Uganda, thereby causing conflict.

“I ordered these Turkanas to never bring firearms into Uganda eons ago.” They should come without weapons to graze their cattle.

“However, they did not pay attention. Instead, they conducted raids, disarmed Karimonjong, killed individuals, etc. According to reports, they stole 2,245 cattle from the Jie. They murdered our 3 Geologists, 1 Officer, and 1 Soldier who was protecting them. This Turkana nonsense must immediately cease,” he stated.

Initially, the government intended to construct a wall between Kenya and Somalia. The project, however, stalled due to financial constraints.
