Kenyan Man Allegedly Tortured and Killed by US Police

A Kenyan family residing in the United States is in mourning following the death of their son at the hands of police, who allegedly suffocated him.

Irvo Otieno died in police custody after being arrested in response to a number of complaints lodged against him.

According to Otieno’s mother Caroline Ouko, he required only specialized treatment for his mental distress.

Ouko states that she contacted her son’s psychiatrist to arrange for his special movement to a mental health facility where he would be treated, but before the psychiatrist could move, the police surrounded their home because Otieno’s neighbors accused him of theft.

On March 3, the police reportedly placed him in handcuffs and transported him to Henrico Doctors’ Hospital before transferring him to Henrico Jail. The family believes the police tortured Otieno in this jail before rushing him to the Central State Hospital, where he died.

Seven police officers who handled him are now charged with second-degree murder after the court was informed that they facilitated Otieno’s death by smoothing him over.

According to Dinwiddie County Commonwealth’s Attorney Ann Cabell Baskervill, the 28-year-old was held on the ground for 12 minutes while in handcuffs and leg irons by seven officers.

She added that there is clear video evidence of the officers torturing Otieno.

Mark Krudys, the family’s attorney, said in a statement, “The family is heartbroken after learning of Irvo’s brutal death and inhumane treatment in the hours preceding his death.”

This occurs at a time when US police are under scrutiny for using excessive force or violence against blacks in the United States.
