Kenyan Kwanza MCAs Consider Impeaching Governor Kawira

Kenya Kwanza MCAs at Meru County Assembly have withdrawn their support for Governor Kawira Mwangaza.

They spoke on Saturday when they addressed the press at Gatimene Gardens Hotel.

Meru Majority leader Evans Mawira (Mitunguu) said 27 Kenya Kwanza MCAs appended their signatures and will soon table an impeachment motion against Mwangaza.

“We are dissatisfied and disappointed with what has been happening in Meru, there has been a lot of drama, shenanigans, and chaos recently and it is not our mantra, we have decided to distance ourselves,” he said.

The Majority leader said they have not yet discussed the grounds but are sure they will find substantial grounds to impeach her.

The majority of Meru MCAs are from UDA.

Mawira said they will support a bill in the assembly that will equalize the Ward Development Fund in all wards.

Meru Majority leader Evans Mawira (Mitunguu) and other MCAs at a press briefing on Saturday at Gatimene Gardens, September 23, 2023.

He said that Governor Mwangaza has not been supportive of MCAs who do not support her in their wards in terms of development.

He added that they will work with other MCAs on the way forward for Meru County.

Majority Whip Jim Muchui (Athwana) echoed the sentiments.

He said the governor is a lone ranger and does not respect other leaders.

Patrick Muthuri (Abothuguchi West) said Governor Mwangaza’s utterances have made her face the predicament she is facing.

“She would have been our governor for ten years but everyone has seen she does not have the capacity,” Muthuri said.

Should the impeachment plan sail through, it will be the second time Governor Kawira will have been impeached in less than a year.

A similar move hit a snag after the Senate saved her from ouster on December 30, 2022.

This was after 67 of the 69 MCAs that were present in the Meru County Assembly impeached her on December 14 on five grounds including abuse of office just 64 days after she assumed office.

Kawira pleaded not guilty to all charges.

The 11-member Senate special committee chaired by Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale said none of the 62 allegations leveled against her were substantiated.
