Kenya Wildlife Officers Allegedly Detain Teen, Toss Him Into Lake Nakuru

The Kenya Wildlife Services (KWS) officers responsible for managing Lake Nakuru National Park are facing serious allegations from residents of Barut, a community located along the edges of the lake.

Locals have accused the officers of arresting an 18-year-old boy who was fishing in the lake, driving him into deep waters, and then throwing him into the lake without a life jacket.

According to the residents, the young man was fishing in the lake when he was apprehended by KWS officers, despite the ban on fishing activities in the area.

Witnesses report that the officers forcibly took the boy to the deeper parts of the lake, removed his life jacket, and then pushed him into the water. Since the incident, the boy’s body has not been recovered, causing anguish for his family and the community.

The incident has sparked outrage among the residents, who describe the officers’ actions as heartless and inhumane.

Gilbert Orenge, a relative of the missing young man, expressed his distress over the situation, stating that the family and other community members have been searching for the boy’s body in vain.

He criticized the officers for their harsh treatment and lack of compassion.

Other locals have also voiced their concerns about KWS officers’ behavior, claiming that they often conduct unwarranted raids on the homes of people living near the lake.

The residents are calling for the government to intervene and take necessary action to address the situation and ensure justice for the missing young man.

When contacted for a response, Lake Nakuru National Park’s senior warden, Titus Mitau, stated that he could not comment on the matter as it is currently under investigation.

This has left the community awaiting further updates and potential accountability for the officers’ alleged actions.

The situation has brought to light the challenges faced by residents in dealing with KWS officers and their enforcement of regulations in the area.

The tragic disappearance of the young man has not only caused grief for his family but also heightened tensions between the community and KWS.

The outcome of the investigation and the government’s response will be crucial in determining the next steps for the affected residents and the boy’s family.
