Kenya Supreme Court Judge Isaac Lenaola Elected Vice President of Sierra Leone Court
On Thursday, February 29, Justice Isaac Lenaola of the Supreme Court was appointed as the Vice President of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone.
Upon declaring his appointment, the Judiciary emphasized in its announcement that the jury’s extensive experience and unwavering commitment to justice rendered him a suitable selection for the esteemed position.
“We are delighted to announce that Honorable Justice Isaac Lenaola of Kenya was today, Thursday, February 29, elected unanimously as the Vice President of the Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone at the Court’s Plenary held in Freetown, Sierra Leone,” Judiciary announced.
He is scheduled to serve as the deputy for Justice Richard Lussick from Samoa, who was chosen as the President of the court for a duration of two years.
The Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone is a temporary court that follows the Special Court for Sierra Leone. It is tasked with responsibilities such as safeguarding witnesses and providing assistance
Lenaola will be responsible for handling requests from the Sierra Leone government for evidence and information to aid in investigations, prosecutions, forfeiture proceedings, and asylum cases.

The experienced judge will also oversee the monitoring of prison terms, grants of clemency, reductions in sentences, and premature releases.
“The supervision of the enforcement of sentences is a continuing obligation that may extend until 2055,” read part of a statement by the Judiciary.
‘This supervision includes inspection of the conditions of imprisonment, as well as tracking of time served and dates of release, including early release, pardon or commutation,” the statement firther read.
Judge Lenaola, highly esteemed in the legal community, entered the judiciary in 2003 and served as the Resident Judge in numerous High Courts.
Prior to his elevation to the position of Supreme Court judge in 2016, Lenaola served in various capacities, including as a commissioner at the Judicial Service Commission, a member of the Judicial Training Institute, Chairman of the Kenya Magistrates and Judges Association, and Treasurer of the East African Magistrates and Judges Association.
