Kenya Ranks 117th in Global Peace Index 2023: Here Is Why

The Institute for Economics and Peace’s Global Peace Index for 2023 ranks Kenya as the 117th most peaceful nation in the world.

In the report released on Wednesday, June 28, Kenya was also ranked 26th in Sub-Saharan Africa, a rise of two positions from the previous year.

Thomas Morgan, the Institute’s Associate Director of Research, explained that extensive research was conducted across the nation. According to him, the improvement was warranted by the country’s significant progress.

Morgan stated in an interview with KTN on Thursday, June 29, that Kenya’s outstanding characteristic was its prompt remittance of peacekeeping funding.

Compared to the previous year, the government’s remittances, particularly to United Nations (UN) agencies, had made significant progress.

“Improving the timeliness of UN peacekeeping funding payments was also considered. This was a significant factor in Kenya’s improved ranking, he stated.

In addition, Morgan remarked that the nation’s approach to terrorism had improved.

This, he explained, was supported by indicators of militarization, such as the decline in the number of law enforcement officers.

“Another factor was the effect of terrorism and several militarization indicators. He added that the size of Kenya’s law enforcement has decreased.

In addition, the director of research noted that Kenya had made progress in upholding and guaranteeing the proper execution of incarceration rights.

The fourth factor, he disclosed, was that the number of homicides in the country had decreased, indicating that the citizens were more peaceful.

“This is attributable to a variety of factors, including improvements in incarceration rights in Kenya. A reduction in the homicide rate was an additional factor. Kenya, for instance, has a lower homicide rate than the United States,” he stated.

Iceland, followed by Denmark and Ireland, topped the list as the most peaceful country.

The Global Peace Index for 2022 ranked Kenya as the 120th most peaceful nation in the world.
