Kenya Power Announces Rationing in 12 Counties After Losing North Rift Transmission Line
On Sunday, January 4, Kenya Power declared the implementation of power rationing in 12 counties situated in the Western, Nyanza, and Rift Valley regions.
In a communication, Kenya Power stated that the scheduled disruptions were a result of the North Rift transmission power line being unavailable.
“A section of the transmission power line in North Rift is currently unavailable due to unforeseen circumstances arising from critical reinforcement works undertaken on a section of the line earlier today,” the statement read in part.
Areas that will experience impacts comprise Eldoret, Nandi, Bungoma, Kakamega, Kisumu, Busia, Nakuru, and Nyandarua.
Others include Kericho, Bomet, Kisii, and Homabay counties.
As per the announcement, individuals living in the vicinity will experience sporadic power disruptions lasting for a duration of two hours each.
Less than a month had passed since Kenya encountered power disruptions, with the North Rift power transmission line failing for the second time during this period.

On January 7, Kenya Power reported the loss of a power line due to essential maintenance activities being carried out in that particular section.
Kenya is currently undertaking the unbundling of a power transmission line in a project that is expected to incur a cost of Ksh37 billion for the taxpayers.
The Africa Development Bank, a major supporter of development and infrastructure initiatives in Kenya, is providing funding for the project.
As per a resolution passed by the Cabinet in December 2023, the division of transmission lines aims to prevent a nationwide power outage by ensuring that the failure of a single line does not lead to such an event.
Moreover, Kenya is investigating the possibility of a power-sharing arrangement with Tanzania and neighboring East African nations. This plan involves drawing electricity for each country from a collectively shared grid.
