KeNHA Sets Date for Mai Mahiu-Narok Road Reopening

On Monday, May 1, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the reopening of Mai Mahiu-Narok Road.

The agency disclosed that the road would be accessible on Tuesday, May 2 in the afternoon.

A section of the road was washed away by floodwaters on Sunday, April 30, resulting in the closure of the road.

The teams have been instructed to work day and night to reopen the road as soon as possible, as indicated by KeNHA.

“The Authority hereby notifies the public that the restoration works are in full swing and that the team on site has been instructed to work day and night to reopen the road as soon as possible,” read a portion of the KeNHA statement.

Officials from the Ministry of Roads and Transport, led by the Principal Secretary for Roads, Eng. Joseph Mbugua, and the KeNHA Director General, Eng. Kungu Ndungu assured the public that the road would be fully restored by Tuesday, May 2, 2023.

Eng. Mbugua was pleased with the pace at which the construction work was progressing. But he urged motorists to exercise patience and tolerance due to the inconveniences.

Mbugua stated, “We thank the public for their patience and continue to urge everyone to use the roads with caution. Especially during this rainy season.”

The Mai Mahiu – Narok Highway has developed deep cracks, making it hazardous for drivers.

This occurred 6 kilometers from Mai Mahiu Town in the direction of Narok.

Officials from the Ministry of Transport ordered the road’s closure for the public’s safety and to expedite restoration efforts.

This was not the first instance of heavy rains destroying roads. As a similar incident occurred along the Narok-Maai Mahiu Road on March 23. When rainwater washed away a portion of the Mai Mahiu-Narok road in the Suswa region, leaving motorists stranded.

After the road became impassable due to mud and debris from the floods. The traffic jam spanned a distance of several kilometers.

According to witnesses at the scene. Motorists avoided a pile of silt on the roadway. Out of fear of getting stuck, resulting in a six-hour-long traffic jam.

On August 21, 2018, seven residents of the Ongata Rongai estate in Kajiado County perished in flood waters after a bridge they were crossing collapsed.

It is believed that the Fatima South Bridge collapsed into the River Kandisi due to structural failures exacerbated by the flash floods.
