KENHA Closes Mai Mahiu Highway Due to Dangerous Cracks

Sunday, April 30, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced the temporary closure of the heavily traveled Mai Mahiu road.

The Authority announced through a public notice that motorists would not be able to use the Mai Mahiu – Narok Highway.

After the highway, which was frequently used by trucks and lorries, developed cracks that made it a hazard for vehicles, this occurred.

“KeNHA wishes to inform drivers and the general public of the closure of the Mai Mahiu – Narok Highway.

“This closure is due to a severe crack six kilometers from Mai Mahiu Town in the direction of Mai Mahiu. Which has cut across the road and rendered it unsafe for motorists,” the notice stated in part.

Regarding the cause of the cracks, KeNHA stated, “The cause of the crack is unknown. But preliminary reports attribute it to the ongoing rains.”

The government agency added that the road was subject to periodic earth movements.

“As KeNHA begins restoration work in the affected area. Motorists on the Mai Mahiu-Narok route are advised to use alternate routes,” the advisory read.

Alternate routes include the Narok – Kisiriri – Mau Summit – Njoro turn-off (B18) Road. Which connects to Nakuru and other locations. And the Narok – Bomet – Kaplong (B6) Road, which connects to Kaplong – Kericho (B7) Road.

Affected Kenyans were assured, “The Authority is working around the clock to repair the damaged section of road.”

Not for the first time has the road been closed due to suspected earth movements.

In 2018, a large, multikilometer-long fracture appeared on the Narok – Mai Mahiu road. Which geologists attributed to the Somali plate’s gradual separation from the rest of Africa.
