KANU Leadership Change: Salat Out, Wainaina In

The Kenya African National Union (KANU) National Executive Council (NEC) has made significant changes to the party’s leadership.

The party has nominated George Wainaina for Secretary-General to begin with.

The position became vacant after the previous Secretary General, Nick Salat, was expelled for defecting to President William Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza alliance.

According to a statement released by KANU chairman Gideon Moi on Thursday, the nomination is the result of discussions held at the party’s NEC meeting on February 11, 2023.

Other nominees include Ibrahim Sheikh as the 1st National Vice-Chairman and Naisula Lesuuda, the MP for Samburu West, as the 2nd National Vice-Chairperson.

In addition, Baringo MP Gladwel Tungo has been nominated for the position of KANU Women Congress National Chairperson, and Mohammed Bashir Dahir has been nominated as Secretary for Health.

Job Waka will replace Wainaina as the National Executive Director of the political party.

Moi noted, however, that the nominations are temporary pending party elections.

The criteria for nominating the aforementioned individuals, he added, are that “they bring a wealth of political experience with extensive knowledge and expertise in the administration and management of political affairs and institutions.”
