Kanini Kega’s Bombshell: Jubilee’s Potential Exit from Azimio Spells Trouble for Uhuru

On Tuesday, June 13, a faction of the Jubilee Party led by Secretary General Jeremiah Kioni distanced itself from EALA MP Kanini Kega’s notice to withdraw from the Azimio la Umoja Coalition, calling it a forgery.

Kioni insisted that Jubilee remained an affiliate party of Azimio and urged its members affiliated with the ruling Kenya Kwanza Coalition to leave.

“Jubilee Party will remain in Azimio. Kioni stated, “We kindly request those who are tired of this cause to leave quietly and join a party where they will be more comfortable.”

Kanini Kega, a member of the East Africa Legislative Assembly (EALA), announced on June 13 that he had applied to withdraw the Jubilee Party from the Azimio la Umoja Coalition.

Kega disclosed in a statement that the move was the result of resolutions passed by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Tuesday, June 6.

“Further take notice that under Articles 33.1.1 and 2 of the Party Constitution as read together with Article 22.1. of the Deed of Agreement for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition dated March 12, 2022, Jubilee Party hereby gives the notice to withdraw from the Deed of Agreement for Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition,” read a portion of Kanini Kega’s statement.

Kega added that the party’s NEC unanimously approved the withdrawal after analyzing the agreement in light of its political objectives.

The statement added that the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Jubilee Party met on June 6, 2023, and decided to withdraw from the Deed of Agreement for the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition.

The withdrawal application was submitted amid a series of disputes between two factions within the party, led by Jeremiah Kioni, the embattled Jubilee Secretary General, and Kega.

30 May, on Inooro FM, Kega discussed inviting former president Uhuru Kenyatta to another National Delegates Conference (NDC) of the Jubilee Party.

Despite their divergent political ideologies, Kega acknowledged Uhuru’s influence in the party, despite replacing him with the nominated MP Sabina Chege.

This occurred after the faction led by Jeremiah Kioni held a party NDC event on May 22 at the Ngong Racecourse in Nairobi, which was attended by the former president.

Uhuru had used the NDC event to punish party members who had allegedly violated party regulations.

Uhuru expelled Kanini Kega, Naomi Shaban, Jimmy Angweny, former Buuri MP Bonface Kinoti, and Joshua Kutuny from the Jubilee party.

On the other hand, Raila Odinga, leader of the Azimio party, blamed President William Ruto on May 4 for the escalating disputes within the Jubilee party.

During a press briefing in Nairobi, Raila lamented, “The Kenya Kwanza administration’s interference with the Jubilee party management is a ploy to weaken affiliate parties within the opposition coalition party.”

Raila’s intervention occurred after the Kanini Kega Jubilee party faction ousted Uhuru Kenyatta as party leader on May 2 and appointed Sabina Chege as his replacement.
