Kabras Sugar CEO Jaswant Rai Freed by Kidnappers
Senior Counsel Kioko Kilukumi, the attorney for Kabras Sugar’s chairman Jaswant Singh Rai, has affirmed that his ‘abductors’ have freed him.
The attorney reported that his client was released on Sunday evening, two days after being kidnapped along Wood Avenue in Kilimani on August 25.
According to the attorney, the industrialist was shaken but otherwise healthy and reunited with his family, but he has yet to identify his abductors.
The entrepreneur went missing after his Toyota LC200 was ambushed at approximately 4 p.m. at the intersection of Wood Avenue and Kellwood Apartments in Kilimani by individuals driving a grey double-cab pick-up.
CCTV footage of the kidnapping shows four men stepping out of the pickup truck and forcibly dragging the billionaire’s car’s occupants into their vehicle before accelerating off down Galana Road.

The vehicle of Mr. Rai is left idle on the road. Later, officers at Kilimani Police Station received reports of an abandoned vehicle and towed it to the station; it was unoccupied and had sustained only a minor abrasion on the front right side where it had collided with the pickup.
The vehicle was reported using OB number 40/25/8/2023. Moss Ndiwa, commander of Kilimani Sub County Police, told the Nation that the next day, a woman who identified herself as Mr. Rai’s daughter, accompanied by an attorney, filed a missing person’s report at the station. Under OB number 21/26/08/2023, the report was registered.
“She also confirmed that the vehicle that was towed to the station was his,” the officer continued.
Since then, the family has shared the CCTV footage of the incident, which led them to conclude that Mr. Rai had been kidnapped, but Mr. Ndiwa stated that they were unable to corroborate that this was indeed a kidnapping.
Simultaneously, the Director of Criminal Investigations, Mr. Amin Mohamed, asserted that his officers were not holding Mr. Rai.
