‘Kaa Ngumu!’ MP Ichung’wah Urges Ruto To Slash Judiciary Budget After Housing Levy Ruling

Kimani Ichung’wa, the Majority Leader of the National Assembly, has called on President William Ruto to use his authority to stop the Judiciary from what he considers as undermining the government.

The statements from the Kikuyu Member of Parliament follow the Court of Appeal’s decision on Friday to reject a request to temporarily halt a High Court ruling that declared the housing levy as unconstitutional.

Addressing the audience in Meru County last Friday in response to the court’s decision, Ichung’wah asserted that the Judiciary is exceeding its designated responsibilities, consequently impeding the functioning of both the Executive and the Legislature.

He additionally claimed that the perceived involvement of the Judiciary poses a threat to the Kenya Kwanza initiatives, which aim to generate employment opportunities for the youth.

“What we have seen has nothing to do with the independence of the Judiciary. This is judicial overreach. They have overreached their mandate and are now sabotaging the work of the Executive and legislature and sabotaging the jobs created for the millions of youth in our country,” said the vocal lawmaker.

“I want to plead with you, Your Excellency; don’t allow your government to be sabotaged or undermined by cartels and masters of State capture, either through the Judiciary or even in the Legislature. Kaa ngumu rais!”

Ichung’wah also suggested that the State might reduce the funds assigned to the Judiciary if it persists in obstructing Ruto’s plans for the development agenda.

This occurred in the same week when the President met with Chief Justice Martha Koome and committed to providing the Judiciary with extra financial resources to enhance the efforts against corruption.

“Najua ulifanya mkutano na hawa watu na ulisema utawaongezea pesa lakini kama unataka kuwaongezea pesa na hiyo pesa itakuja kufanyiwa budget kwa Bunge na mahali pesa inatoka ni kwa ushuru na hii Judiciary ndio inasimamisha ushuru….mimi naona hapo tutakosana kidogo. Ikifika Bunge tutafungafunga,” Ichung’wah said.

“Please allow us ata sisi tupige msasa budget ya nchi yote. Tuangalie kama Judiciary wanapata pesa na hiyo pesa inafanya nini kuchangia ajira ya vijana wa Kenya.”

On Saturday, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot reiterated the sentiments expressed by MP Ichung’wah, asserting that the affordable housing project remains unstoppable, notwithstanding the Court of Appeal’s decision.

“This affordable housing program is a covenant that President Ruto entered between him and the people that voted for him, and nobody should dare come between that program,” Cheruiyot said in Elgeyo Marakwet.

“Vijana wengi ambao wanasimama hapa ambao watabenefit katika hii Elgeyo Marakwet from affordable housing program hawatatatizwa kupitia wale wajuaji wanakimbia kortini na kusimamisha mipango ya serikali.”
