JUSTIN ROILAND, co-creator, and star of Rick and Morty has been charged with felony domestic violence.

According to a criminal complaint filed in May 2020 by the Orange County District Attorney, Justin Roiland, the star and co-creator of the animated comedy series “Rick and Morty,” has been charged with felony domestic violence in Orange County, California, in connection with a 2020 incident.

Roiland appeared in court for a pre-trial hearing on Thursday, January 12.

One of Roiland’s attorneys stated in a statement that his client is innocent and that he expects the case to be dismissed.

“We look forward to clearing Justin’s name and assisting him in moving forward as soon as possible,” wrote attorney T. Edward Welbourn.

In the case, Roiland, 42, is charged with one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by threat, violence, fraud, and/or deception. The case was first reported publicly by NBC News.

According to the complaint, the incident happened on or about January 19, 2020, against an anonymous Jane Doe who was dating Roiland at the time.

Roiland pleaded not guilty to both charges in October 2020, according to Orange County Superior Court records.

The case has been the subject of more than a dozen court hearings, including pre-trial hearings, since then. A trial date has not yet been set.

In May 2020, Roiland was charged. He was arrested in August 2020, released on a $50,000 bond, and arraigned in October 2020.

According to a protective order filed in October 2020 and documented in court minutes, Roiland is not to harass, threaten, or spy on the person named in the order.

According to the order, Roiland cannot come within 100 feet of the person and must surrender any firearms he owns or possesses.

The order is valid until October 2023, and it is unknown who requested the order.

Roiland received an Emmy in 2020 for Rick and Morty, co-created and voiced the main character in Hulu’s Solar Opposites (which was recently renewed for a fifth season), produced Hulu’s Koala Man series, and released two NFT collections.
