Journalists and Police Officers Killed in Gang Attack During Haitian Hospital Reopening
Two journalists and a police officer lost their lives on Tuesday during a gang attack at the reopening of a hospital in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The incident highlights the ongoing violence in the country.
Journalists Markenzy Nathoux and Jimmy Jean were fatally shot by members of the “Viv Ansanm” gang coalition at the State University of Haiti Hospital, also known as General Hospital.
Robest Dimanche, spokesperson for the Online Media Collective, confirmed the attack. Other journalists were injured and are receiving medical treatment at a nearby clinic.
A police officer was also killed during the assault, according to Haitian National Police spokesperson Lionel Lazarre, who did not share additional details.
The hospital had been closed since February following a previous attack by the same gang. Witnesses reported that gunfire erupted as the facility reopened, leaving several wounded.
Local outlet Gazette Haiti shared images of injured individuals on the hospital floor, describing the scene as “total panic in the city centre.”

Leslie Voltaire, president of Haiti’s transitional ruling council, condemned the attack as “unacceptable” and extended sympathies to the victims’ families. He promised that the perpetrators would face consequences.
This tragic event is the latest in a string of escalating gang violence in Port-au-Prince. Last week, the same gang set fire to another hospital, Bernard Mevs, destroying much of the facility.
Haiti has been grappling with rising gang attacks, including a massacre in early December that left nearly 200 dead, according to the UN. Armed groups have also targeted infrastructure, forcing the capital’s airport to halt commercial flights last month.
Despite international efforts, including a UN-backed mission led by Kenya to support Haitian police, gang violence continues to devastate the nation, marked by kidnappings, murders, and destruction of key facilities.
