IPOA Asks Gabriel Oguda, Osama Otero, 6 Others To Record Statements on Police Brutality
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has revealed the status of reported cases of abductions and disappearances of youth who engaged in the recent anti-government protests.
In a statement by IPOA chairperson Anne Makori, the body said that it had registered eleven complaints which are at different stages of investigations.
For eight of the complaints, IPOA noted that the victims had been found alive with allegations of harassment and torture. The body requested the victims to record statements to ascertain the allegations. These victims include Austin Omondi, Gabriel Oguda, John Frank, Drey Mwangi, Shadrack Kiprono, Osama Otero, Leslie Muturi, and Joshua Okayo.
IPOA noted that one of the victims, Joseph Mwangi, is still missing and requested eyewitnesses to provide any relevant information regarding his whereabouts.
Denzel Omondi, a third-year JKUAT student who was among the protestors who stormed Parliament during the demonstrations, was found deceased days after he was reported missing.

IPOA officials attended Omondi’s post-mortem examination and have since requested police documents. They also appeal to the public to provide eyewitness accounts or video footage of the incident.
The authority also called upon witnesses to provide information regarding Mukhtar Tache Ali, Aura Abdi Diba, and Issa Osman who disappeared shortly after departing from a restaurant in Isiolo town on July 6, 2024. They had engaged in the anti-government protests in Isiolo days prior.
IPOA revealed that members of the public can provide any information through an anonymous reporting platform to aid in the investigations.
“IPOA remains steadfast in its commitment to conduct its investigations with utmost independence, impartiality, fairness and neutrality.”
The statement comes amid calls by Kenyans for IPOA to crack the whip on rogue officers who used brute force against protestors, with others using live ammunition contrary to the National Police Service (NPS) Act.
