The government has declared illegal the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Opposition Coalition’s planned demonstrations, setting the stage for yet another clash between police and protestors on Wednesday.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome stated that the Raila Odinga-led faction had not formally notified the police of the planned gatherings, making the protests illegal.

He thus cautioned Kenyans against participating in the demonstrations, stating that the police would deal with demonstrators accordingly.

“By the National Police Service’s mandate to maintain law and order, protect life and property, and preserve peace, we wish to inform the public that any demonstrations held on Wednesday, July 19, 2023, in any part of Kenya will be dealt with swiftly and by the law,” IG Koome stated.

“Contrary to legal requirements, no organizers/planners of the purported demonstrations have notified the Police of such gatherings.”

The IG cited past demonstrations that occurred in various parts of the country last week, stating that they resulted in deaths and property devastation, and therefore posed a threat to national security and would not be permitted.

Therefore, he exhorted the public to fulfill their daily obligations.

“While Article 37 of the Constitution provides the right to assemble, demonstrate, and picket, lessons from recent similar demonstrations that left trails of property destruction, injuries, and loss of life indicate that such demonstrations pose a threat to national security,” he said.

Koome added, “We, therefore, urge all law-abiding members of the public to continue with their daily activities and commend all NPS Officers for their ongoing patriotism, selflessness, and dedication to our country.”

Koome’s announcement comes mere hours after Azimio’s assertion that they would continue to demonstrate from Wednesday through Friday.

President William Ruto and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki have both issued warnings to dissidents and reaffirmed that no gatherings will be tolerated.
