Ichung’wah and Wandayi Vow to Impeach UDA MP Nimrod Mbai

National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah and Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi joined forces on Tuesday, August 1 during parliamentary proceedings to recommend the removal of Kitui East Member of Parliament Nimrod Mbai from his position as Chairman of the Public Petitions Committee.

Nimrod Mbai was anticipated to address a petition regarding compensation for land and properties acquired by eminent domain along the Kibwezi-Kitui road.

Speaker Moses Wetangula demanded an explanation from the house leadership regarding Mbai’s repeated neglect to attend crucial parliamentary proceedings representing Kitui East.

“The leadership of the Committee on Public Petitions has been perpetually absent from the House.” It is no longer just the executives who are absent, but also the members,” Wandayi told the Speaker.

Speaker Moses Wetangula expressed concern over the Public Petitions Committee’s large backlog of unaddressed issues, highlighting Nimrod Mbai’s lamentable and persistent absence from parliamentary sessions.

Wandayi stated, “I am recommending to Ichung’wah that we move swiftly and convene the Legislation Committee to address the issue comprehensively.”

Ichung’wah concurred with his colleague that Mbai had left the parliamentary leadership with no choice but to act decisively.

“Any chair who does not take their duties seriously is subject to impeachment and replacement by the membership.”

The Kikuyu representative told his Kitui East counterpart, “I will be very available to ensure that this occurs.”

He also remarked that only one committee member, Baringo Central MP Joshua Kandi, has consistently attended committee meetings.

It was reported that Turbo MP, who serves as committee chairman, was hospitalized and unable to attend parliamentary proceedings.

Wetang’ula expressed regret that Mbai had let down Kenyans and should be held accountable for his actions.

“Remember, Majority and Minority Leaders, that Kenyans come to this chamber in the expectation that you will be able to solve their problems. When their petitions arrive here and remain in a queue indefinitely, we fail Kenyans.”

Since their rise to Parliamentary leadership in 2022, Kimani Ichung’wah and Opiyo Wandayi have been at odds, primarily because of their loyalty to their respective Party leaders, President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

Consistently, the leaders have disputed over Azimio Coalition’s anti-government demonstrations and government policy, such as the passage of the Finance Bill.
