ICC takes action on Azimio’s letter regarding IG Koome and the Northlands City raid.

The Hague, Netherlands-based International Criminal Court (ICC) confirmed receipt of Azimio la Umoja’s letter. It demanded an investigation into the conduct of the police during mass protests.

In particular, the opposition requested that the International Criminal Court investigate police negligence in the raid of Northlands Farm in Ruiru, Kiambu County – owned by the Kenyatta family – and the destruction of property at East Africa Spectre – linked to Raila Odinga, leader of the opposition party Azimio.

According to reports, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan, acknowledged receipt of the letter but had not yet decided whether to initiate an investigation.

If Khan continues with the investigation, he must conduct an impartial and exhaustive analysis. Upon completion of its investigations, the ICC would file charges and issue an arrest warrant for those found guilty.

During the mass action, the Azimio regime accused Inspector General Japhet Koome of orchestrating a systematic attack on their supporters. According to the letter, nine people died and dozens were injured as a result of the mass demonstrations.

The opposition asserted that the actions violated Article 7 (1) of the Rome Statute, which states that crimes against humanity can occur in peacetime, similar to the crime of genocide.

Raila emphasized the significance of the ICC intervening in the enumerated issues to promote justice.

In the letter dated April 14 and penned by Raila’s attorney Paul Mwangi, Azimio also accused President William Ruto of violating the Constitution and brought up the attempted assassination during the mass action.

The attorney claimed that ten rounds were fired at Raila’s vehicle in Pipeline, Embakasi South Constituency, on April 3, 2023.

Invasion

According to reports, non-natives raided the Northlands farm on March 27, 2023, and stole over 1,400 sheep worth over Ksh70 million.

The next day’s police arrival raised questions about the invasion of Kenyatta’s farm.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki defended the police, saying they were distracted by protestors and unable to respond quickly to the invasion.

Gachagua’s Response

Saturday, April 15, however, Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua poked holes in Azimio’s letter to the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Gachagua wants Raila and his team extradited to The Hague for illegal protests that killed people and destroyed property.

“Those Azimio characters who have destroyed the lives and property of the Kenyan people should be brought before the ICC.” Gachagua said while addressing a gathering in Nyandarua County.
