“I Want Justice for My Son!” Slain Austin Makokha’s Mother Demands Accountability

Austin Makokha’s mother, one of the victims killed during the anti-Finance Bill protests, is seeking justice for her son. She was present at the Nakuru Gen Z gathering at Nyayo Gardens on Sunday, where Kenyans honored those who died during the anti-tax demonstrations.

The group held prayers and a moment of silence for those who lost their lives during the Occupy Parliament protests. Makokha’s mother expressed her sorrow over her son’s death amid the chaotic demonstrations.

She shared that Makokha was the primary provider for their family, taking on a parental role in the household. She voiced her grief and anger, noting that no action had been taken since his death.

“I want to thank all of you for coming to grieve with us. I’m happy to see you, and we are together in this. I want justice for my son Austin. I’m so sad and angry. Austin was like a parent in our home; he used to take care of his brother,” she said.

“I ask Ipoa to look at our case and see how they can help us take care of Austin’s brother.”

On July 23, the Director of Public Prosecutions, Renson Ingonga, announced that his office had received files from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (Ipoa) concerning four victims of alleged police shootings. However, Austin Makokha’s file was not included.

The DPP stated that current investigations had not identified any police officers responsible for the injuries or deaths of protesters. He urged Kenyans with information about police conduct during the protests to come forward and provide statements.

The DPP emphasized that witness statements are crucial for holding suspects accountable.

The mass protests began on June 18, driven by Parliament’s decision to pass the Finance Bill despite widespread opposition. The government aimed to raise an additional Sh346 billion in revenue for the 2024-25 financial year.

President William Ruto eventually succumbed to pressure, withdrawing the Bill after protesters died during the Occupy Parliament protests on June 25. Nonetheless, Gen Z protesters vowed to continue their demonstrations, demanding accountability and better governance.
