I Told Raila I’d Work With Ruto If He Lost 2022 Poll – Atwoli
Francis Atwoli, the Secretary General of the Central Organisation of Trade Unions (Cotu), has revealed that he informed Azimio leader Raila Odinga about his willingness to collaborate with William Ruto should Ruto assume the presidency in 2022.
On Sunday, Atwoli mentioned that he had cautioned Raila. Atwoli had informed Raila that if his electoral efforts were mishandled and he didn’t emerge victorious, Raila would return to his position at Cotu and collaborate with the current government.
“And I told my Azimio people if you mismanage the election and you are not elected, I will return to my office and when I return to my office you should know that I will work with the government,” Atwoli said.
“I did not hide them. And indeed we mismanaged the whole election. We didn’t have agents, we didn’t have any logistics and strategic election committee.”
Atwoli emphasized the importance of collaboration between workers, employers, and the current government, highlighting that governments play a crucial role in creating conducive work and business environments.
He asserted that being a unionist, his responsibility involves engaging in negotiations with the current government to secure improved welfare for workers.

“We employers and government and workers will work together because government provides an enabling environment from where we exist. And that is our job, to negotiate with the government,” Atwoli said.
The leader of Cotu mentioned that while actively participating in the Azimio campaign, he consistently criticized Ruto. However, he had already communicated to the Opposition leaders about the consequences that would follow if he were to lose the election.
“No one was a critic of William Ruto more than me. In Azimio, I was the one who fought Ruto alone even more than Raila. I even said that trees should be cut in Sugoi. Now they are saying Atwoli has taken Cotu to the government.”
During the 2022 presidential election, Atwoli strongly advocated for the candidacy of Raila and invested considerable effort traveling across the country to campaign on his behalf.
However, Raila lost to William Ruto.
