“I know every day could be my last” – Human Rights Activist Boniface Mwangi Exposes Grave Threats to His Life
Boniface Mwangi, a leading human rights advocate, has made a poignant and urgent statement revealing heightened fears for his safety.
Mwangi, who is renowned for his vocal stance against corruption and social injustices, has accused powerful individuals of plotting against him with intentions to end his life.
On September 18, 2024, coinciding with his daughter Naila’s 14th birthday, Mwangi publicly shared his fears, offering a personal insight into the persistent threats he encounters.
He expressed the anxiety of his daily life, stating that he kisses his children each day with the knowledge it might be his last, reflecting his deep sense of vulnerability amid threats from those he believes are trying to silence him.
Mwangi also shared images of two suspicious vehicles that he claimed were parked outside his office.
When confronted by security, the occupants presented themselves as police officers. Mwangi perceives this encounter as part of a larger scheme to intimidate him.
Despite the escalating threats, Mwangi remains resolute, asserting that he will not be easily intimidated.
He declared, “I’m ready to die,” demonstrating his fearless stance on activism and the emotional strain of living under such threats.

He stated, “On August 3rd, 2024, I died. I live each day as if it’s my last, and this overt intimidation, surveillance, and eavesdropping will not deter me. Ultimately, we all face death,” adding that the trauma from living under surveillance had nearly driven him to suicide.
On September 16, 2024, Mwangi elaborated on how he had prepared his will and bid farewells, burdened by the distress linked to what he deems as state-endorsed violence in Kenya.
He reflected on the emotional and psychological impact of his advocacy work, admitting it nearly led him to end his life on August 3, 2024.
Mwangi is well-known for challenging Kenya’s elite, regularly exposing corruption and human rights abuses.
While his activism has earned him considerable respect, it has also attracted numerous threats, amplifying the significance of his recent statements.
His determination to persist despite these dangers highlights his commitment to justice.
The ongoing threats against Mwangi underscore the risks faced by activists in Kenya, as seen in Jimi Wanjigi’s experience with surveillance vehicles disrupting communications at his home.
Mwangi’s refusal to be cowed, even in the face of death, continues to motivate many, underscoring both his resilience and the persistent risks for those challenging entrenched power structures.
