I Have Been A Victim of Public Condemnation for Adjourning Jowie Irungu’s Case- Justice Grace Nzioka Laments

Justice Grace Nzioka conveyed her dissatisfaction on Friday, March 8, regarding the ongoing criticism in the Jowie Irungu and Jacque Maribe legal matter.

Nzioka, speaking in court during Jowie Irungu’s sentencing for murder, stated that she had faced criticism for postponing the murder trial.

“The most disappointing bit, which I must go out clearly because I have become a victim of condemnation for adjourning this matter, and that tells you why I came back here,” Nzioka stated.

When explaining the decision to postpone the case, the judge emphasized the significance of assigning responsibility appropriately.

The initial postponement of the case occurred last October, with a rescheduled date set for January 26, 2024, due to reports of Lady Justice Nzioka’s illness.

A revised date of December 15, 2023, was established, however, the pronouncement of the verdict was postponed once more to January 26, 2024.

On January 26, the proceedings were postponed when Jacque Maribe’s lawyer, Katwa Kigen, informed the court that she was indisposed. The verdict is now scheduled for March 15.

On February 9, during the ruling where Irungu was convicted of murder, Justice Nzioka emphasized that she had chosen to deliver the verdict on the scheduled date due to the absence of a case that was supposed to be addressed on that day.

Additionally, she mentioned that she opted to issue the ruling on February 9 for the sake of justice.

“This judgment was supposed to be delivered 15th of March this year, but in the week I discovered that I had a free Friday which is today because the matters that I was supposed to hear today were not going to take off,” Justice Nzioka noted.

On March 8, Justice Nzioka postponed Jowie’s sentencing to March 13 after receiving a late submission from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the victim’s family, and Jowie’s lawyer.

The judge instructed that the parties involved in the case must submit their responses by Tuesday, March 12, for her to issue the sentence on March 13.
