How 1 Woman Became First Lady of 2 Different Countries- She Married 2 Presidents

Africa has contributed numerous gifts to the world, making it an extraordinary place to reside. The phenomenon of having dual presidents within a single country is remarkable. Additionally, Africa boasts the distinction of being home to the only woman who has served as the First Lady of two different nations: Mozambique and South Africa.

Introducing Graça Simbine Machel, the sole individual in all of history to hold the distinction of being the initial spouse to two distinct democratically chosen African leaders.

Graça Simbine Machel, born in Gaza, Mozambique on October 17, 1945, was the youngest of six siblings. Tragically, her father passed away just three weeks before her birth, but before his death, he requested that she receive an education up to the high school level. This wish was fulfilled by her older siblings.

    Graça Simbine Machel’s journey

Following her graduation from high school, she was awarded a scholarship by the Methodist church to pursue her studies at Lisbon University in Portugal. Opting to focus on languages, she embarked on her chosen academic path.

Because of monitoring by the Portuguese secret police, she had to give up her schooling and escape to Switzerland.

In 1973, she went back to Tanzania and became a member of FRELIMO, where she encountered her initial spouse, Samora Machel, who served as Mozambique’s inaugural president.

Mozambique achieved independence on June 25, 1975, with Samora Machel assuming the role of its inaugural president.

When Samora Machel assumed the presidency of Mozambique, he was a widower following the passing of his wife, Josina, from leukemia in 1971. In September 1975, Graça married Samora Machel, thus assuming the role of the country’s first lady. Concurrently, she held a cabinet position as the Minister of Education until 1986.

Graca resigned from her ministerial position following the tragic plane crash that claimed the life of Samora Machel on October 19, 1986.

Graça’s union with Mandela made quite a splash when it was revealed during Mandela’s 80th birthday celebration, amidst a gathering of more than 2,000 guests from around the world in 1998.

At 52 years old, Graça became the First Lady of South Africa upon marrying Mandela.

Graça said about her marriage to Mandela, “We were grown up; we were settled; we knew the value of a companion, of a partner.”
