Hotel Raid Turns Violent: CCTV Captures Suspects Firing at Customers

Two days after the incident, CCTV footage of four suspects robbing a hotel in Lodwar, Turkana County, on May 17 became available.

Friday, May 19, footage from a local news outlet in Lodwar shows the robbers arriving at the hotel 27 minutes after 9 p.m.

While the other three entered the cashier’s office, one of the robbers was apprehended firing at customers.

Upon hearing gunfire, some hotel guests fled through the kitchen door as they left the building.

Those remaining in the hotel remained on the ground during the nearly three-minute-long incident.

One of the shooters was also captured struggling with a malfunctioning firearm.

The malfunction was also supported by the police report OB NO. 83/17/05/2023, which indicated that the firearm developed a malfunction.

“They stole approximately Ksh20,000, which was the day’s sales, and then attempted to flee on a motorcycle that wouldn’t start. Bodaboda riders on the adjacent stage began to yell for assistance.

“They also attempted to fire one round into the air to frighten them away, but their firearm jammed,” the incident report stated.

The police reported that bystanders attacked the armed robbers after realizing the gun was inoperable.

“Angry citizens overpowered the police and lynched the three suspects.” Three bullet heads, three spent cartridges, and one live 7.62mm special bullet were located at the crime scene.

A numberless motorcycle believed to have been used by the suspects was also recovered, according to the report.

During the incident, one of the suspects escaped with the bodies of his accomplices, which had been transported to the morgue of the Lodwar County Referral Hospital.
