Holy War! Ruto’s Allies Gang Up on Archbishop Muheria For Daring to Criticize Gov’t
On Saturday, February 22, officials from President William Ruto’s government strongly responded to Archbishop Anthony Muheria of the Nyeri Archdiocese after he criticized the government for focusing more on publicity than actual development projects.
Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, while giving a speech, told Muheria to stick to his religious duties and let the government continue with its publicity efforts. Wandayi defended the government’s communication strategy, saying it was necessary to inform people about its development plans and achievements.
“We have a responsibility to share our development plans with the public. That is exactly what we are doing, and we will continue to do so without hesitation,” Wandayi said.
Kipkeleon East MP Joseph Cherorot also weighed in, advising Muheria to concentrate on matters affecting his region instead of involving himself in politics.

Additionally, Energy Principal Secretary Alex Wachira denied that the government was merely engaging in publicity. Instead, he claimed that the government was listening to the people and working to deliver on its promises.
Baringo Women Representative Florence Jematia also dismissed Muheria’s remarks, saying he was out of order. She explained that every government in the world communicates with its citizens about its projects, adding that this was part of public participation, as required by the constitution.
Muheria had made his remarks a day earlier, on Friday, February 21. He had urged President Ruto’s administration to reduce excessive publicity and instead focus on delivering actual development.
“There should be less talk and more action. The government is doing too much advertising—advertising its projects, advertising its plans. But a government is not a marketing agency; it is meant to implement real change,” Muheria stated.
