High-Profile Appointments Rejected by Prominent Kenyans Under President Ruto’s Administration

In Kenya’s ever-evolving political environment, appointments to government positions are seen as prestigious roles offering both influence and a chance to serve the nation. Yet, not everyone readily accepts these opportunities, even when extended by the President himself.

Since assuming office, President William Ruto has filled various high-profile roles to strengthen his administration. However, some Kenyans have declined these offers for personal, family, or political reasons. Here are notable instances of such rejections:

    Margaret Nyambura

In January 2025, Margaret Nyambura, a former ICT Cabinet Secretary, turned down her nomination as Kenyaโ€™s High Commissioner to Ghana. Scheduled for vetting by the Departmental Committee on Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations on January 10, she instead wrote to the National Assembly Clerk citing personal and family commitments.
“I will not appear before the committee due to personal and family matters that make it impossible for me to accept the High Commissioner role,” her letter stated.

    Vincent Kemosi

In April 2024, Vincent Kemosi, former West Mugirango MP, declined the same High Commissioner role. Despite his nomination being forwarded for vetting, Kemosi cited family obligations in his rejection.
“I deeply appreciate the nomination but must decline due to personal and compelling family reasons that prevent me from serving in this capacity,” he explained in his letter.

    Victor Munyaka

Former Machakos Town MP Victor Munyaka refused his October 2024 appointment as chairman of the Kenya Animal Genetic Resource Centre (KAGRC). Citing Kenya’s political climate, Munyaka expressed gratitude but ultimately declined.
“After soul-searching and consultations, I must respectfully decline, considering the current political environment that may hinder the governmentโ€™s economic transformation agenda,” he said.

    Millicent Omanga

In October 2024, ex-nominated Senator Millicent Omanga declined a three-year appointment to the Nairobi Rivers Commission. While acknowledging the honor, she cited personal reasons for her decision but reiterated her commitment to environmental restoration efforts.
“Iโ€™m grateful for the trust shown in me but must decline due to personal reasons. I remain ready to contribute in ways aligned with my current commitments,” she shared on X.

    Faith Odhiambo

July 2024 saw Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo reject an appointment to the President’s Taskforce on public debt auditing. Through a statement, the LSK deemed the task force unconstitutional, asserting that such audits fall under the Auditor-Generalโ€™s mandate.
“The establishment of this task force violates constitutional provisions. As such, neither the LSK president nor its members will participate,” read the LSK statement.

    Justina Wamae

Roots Party 2022 presidential running mate Justina Wamae declined a July 2024 appointment to a health taskforce, citing maternity leave.
“I appreciate the recognition but must decline as maternity leave would hinder my ability to serve effectively at this time,” she stated on X.

These rejections highlight the varied personal, professional, and political considerations shaping decisions about public service in Kenya today.
