Haiti’s Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, has stepped down after a crisis meeting involving CARICOM, the 15-member regional bloc in the Caribbean Community.

According to a statement from Mohammed Irfaan Ali, the president of Guyana and chairman of CARICOM, Henry submitted his resignation on Monday, March 11th.

“We acknowledge his resignation upon the establishment of a transitional presidential council and naming of an interim prime minister,” Irfaan stated.

The CARICOM bloc convened with leaders from various nations, including the United States and Canada, on Monday in response to the escalating situation in the Caribbean country.

As per the information provided, the gathering decided to establish a seven-person presidential committee tasked with selecting a new temporary prime minister to manage the situation.

The gathering disclosed that the strategy involved choosing two additional individuals, in addition to the Prime Minister, to serve as observers, contributing to both governance and the smooth transition to elections.

“I think we can all agree that Haiti is on the brink of disaster. We must take quick and decisive action here in this room to bring the situation under control and to return the country to the Haitian people,” Irfaan told the press.

“The difficult decisions we make here today will have to be in the interest of the Haitian people.”

The soon-to-be-appointed acting Prime Minister will also have the responsibility of getting ready for the forthcoming arrival of a multinational security assistance mission led by Kenyan police officials.

Following his recent visit to Kenya last week, Henry decided to step down and discovered that he couldn’t go back to Haiti. As a result, he has been forced to find refuge in Puerto Rico.

The nation’s primary airport was assaulted by gangs, preventing Henry from landing in the country. Simultaneously, they stormed the maximum-security prison, freeing 4,000 inmates. The gang’s ultimatum for ending the violence was the resignation of the Prime Minister.

State of Deployment

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki has verified that the pre-deployment phase is underway for the deployment of 1,000 police officers to Haiti. This initiative stems from an agreement between the governments of Kenya and Haiti.

The Chief of Staff explained that multiple initiatives were underway, such as completing the status of forces agreement and crafting laws about detention and arrest.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, present at the Jamaica meeting, emphasized the crucial role of the Kenyan military in aiding the restoration of peace in the strife-torn nation.
