Haiti Gang Seizes Airport After Prime Minister Flies to Meet Ruto

On Thursday, February 29, Haiti faced a state of siege as a gang launched an assault on the nation’s primary international airport, police stations, and government offices, causing a halt in regular operations.

The assault occurred shortly following the departure of Haiti’s Prime Minister Ariel Henry to Kenya, where he aimed to conclude arrangements for the deployment of Kenyan forces to assist in the fight against criminal gangs.

In the course of the assault, Jimmy Cherizier, the head of the G9 Family and Allies gang coalition, instructed his followers to carry out attacks near police stations, resulting in the fatalities of four law enforcement officers.

In a video widely shared on social media, Cherizier revealed that the objective was to take over government ministries to free the nation.

Furthermore, he warned Prime Minister Henry not to return from Kenya.

“With our guns and with the Haitian people, we will free the country,” he stated.

After the outbreak of violence in the nation, the Toussaint Louverture International Airport, as well as numerous businesses, government offices, and schools, shut down.

The surge of violence endured in the capital of Haiti, Port-au-Prince, with the gang persistently launching coordinated attacks and further infiltrating the city.

Several Haitian residents made an effort to escape the area by extending their hands in a gesture of peace toward the gang while hastily navigating through the streets.

The armored vehicles of the gang cruised through the city, displaying their strength, while additional members stayed positioned in the vicinity of the slums.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Henry visited Kenya to address the High Court’s decision that prohibited the National Police Service (NPS) from deploying its officers overseas. The court emphasized the absence of a mutual agreement between the two nations as the basis for its ruling.

After the decision, the U.S. government emphasized the need for both nations to reach an agreement.
