Govt to Track Civil Servants’ Punctuality, Performance Using an App

Cabinet Secretary for Public Service, Human Capital Development and Special Programmes, Geoffrey Ruku, has revealed that the government is almost done developing a new digital application that will monitor the performance of all public servants in Kenya.

Speaking in Embu on Monday, August 18, 2025, during his visit to the Eastern Regional Government Offices, Ruku said the app is expected to be launched by the end of October.

The platform will track important details such as reporting and leaving times, leave records, and real-time attendance. According to Ruku, the move is aimed at improving discipline, ensuring civil servants stick to official working hours, and boosting overall service delivery.

“We must raise our standards to serve Kenyans better. Lateness and laxity will no longer be tolerated in government offices,” he stressed.

Ruku described the application as a “game changer” that will help supervisors curb absenteeism and quickly address inefficiencies in government institutions.

    Boosting Efficiency and Accountability

The Cabinet Secretary emphasized that the system will not only improve internal performance but also enhance transparency and public trust in government services.

He noted that delays in public offices often hurt the private sector—especially small and medium-sized businesses—by slowing down approvals, licenses, and other processes critical for economic growth.

“Most people in the private sector start work early because they know success requires effort. Public servants must match that commitment if we truly want national transformation,” Ruku said.

    Integrated Across All Government Agencies

The new digital tool will work alongside existing performance management systems and will be rolled out across ministries, departments, and agencies. Ruku added that the app will be regularly updated to stay effective.

Civil servants who fail to meet performance standards will face disciplinary action, while those who excel will be recognized and rewarded.

Through this initiative, the government hopes to instill a culture of punctuality, hard work, and accountability in the public service, ultimately improving service delivery and driving Kenya’s economic and development goals.
