Govt to Shut Down Kiamaiko Slaughterhouses Following Court Order
On Friday, March 8th, the National Environment Management Authority of Kenya (NEMA) declared the commencement of the shutdown process for Kiamaiko slaughterhouses.
As per the directive from the environmental authority, the action was taken in compliance with a court order issued on July 28, 2022, which instructed the cessation of services by the meat industry.
In compliance with the instructions to close the meat supplier, the government has instructed the cessation of all services provided to the Kiamaiko slaughterhouses.
The offerings encompassed veterinary meat inspection services, public health services, and the provision of Single Business Permits by the Nairobi City County.
The government additionally declared that it had terminated water supply provisions provided by the Nairobi water and sewerage company.
“This will paralyze the entire slaughtering of goats at the slaughter slab due to the illegality of current operations,” NEMA noted.

NEMA’s decision to mandate closure stemmed from persistent worries about the management of blood and offal, along with the inappropriate handling of wastewater discharge.
The governmental organization additionally observed that the abattoirs were functioning in unsanitary conditions and contributed to further contamination of the Nairobi River.
As per the environmental agency’s report, the meat suppliers neglected to comply with the 2013 agreement, which mandated the transfer of their operations to a licensed site by March 31, 2022.
“It is essential to clarify that the intention behind these enforcement measures is not to impede the legitimate trade of meat or the operation of butcheries,” the Authority stated.
“The focus is squarely on addressing the specific deficiencies observed within the slaughterhouse facilities themselves which degrade the environment.”
In April 2022, Kiamaiko secured legal rulings preventing the shutdown of the meat supplier until the case underwent a hearing and final decision.
