Govt Orders NGOs to Submit Their Financial Statements or Risk Being Shut Down

The government has mandated that all Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) must submit their yearly returns and audited financial records within three weeks.

According to a notice from the NGOs Co-ordination Board released on Thursday, all non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are required to submit their reports, regardless of whether they were operational or inactive in the previous fiscal year.

This adheres to Regulation 24 of the 1992 Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) Coordination Regulations, mandating all NGOs to present yearly reports.

The law requires non-governmental organizations to file their yearly reports using Form 14 within three months following the conclusion of their fiscal year.

If the non-compliant NGOs do not adhere to the directive within 21 days of receiving the notice, the Board will proceed with deregistering them.

“For example, NGOs whose financial year ended on September 30, 2023, are required to file their annual reports and financial statements by December 31, 2023, and this will apply to all other quarters of the year,” read part of the notice.

After the 21-day period ended, the Board stated its intention to publish the roster of NGOs that complied and those that did not at www.info@ngobureau.go.ke.

The Board, established in 1992, is a state-run entity responsible for overseeing the regulation of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in Kenya.

The Board operates within the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Interior and National Administration.

Lately, the government has issued a new instruction to all non-governmental organizations (NGOs), requiring them to adjust their activities according to President William Ruto’s Bottom-up economic plan.

Interior PS Raymond Omollo raised concerns about why non-governmental organizations (NGOs) prioritized the goals of international donor organizations over the advancement of the country’s economic development plans.

He observed that it’s essential for all non-governmental organizations to refine their approaches to focus on initiatives that positively impact the local communities.
