Govt Meets Ford Foundation Officials, Issues Way Forward

Officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, led by Principal Secretary Korir Sing’Oei, held a meeting with representatives from the Ford Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in the United States.

The PS stated that the meeting aimed to address concerns mentioned in a letter sent to Ford Foundation President Darren Walker on July 18.

Ford Foundation officials were urged to use donor funds responsibly, ensuring they align with the country’s constitutional values and developmental goals.

The US-based organization was also instructed to follow the values, operational guidelines, and administrative principles outlined in its agreement with the government.

The Ford Foundation was mandated to strictly monitor all Grant Beneficiaries’ activities to ensure they comply with national laws.

The government emphasized Kenya’s dedication to fostering a strong civic space that encourages citizen participation in governance.

Sing’Oei acknowledged the long-standing positive relationship between the Ford Foundation and Kenyan institutions, stressing the importance of all grant beneficiaries, whether governmental or non-state, using donor funds responsibly to advance the country’s constitutional values.

This directive follows President William Ruto’s recent accusations that the Ford Foundation funded anarchy and violence during anti-government protests.

In response to Ruto’s claims, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded clarity from Ford Foundation President Darren Walker on the allocation of funds to various Kenyan organizations and the specific activities funded.

The Ford Foundation denied the allegations, stating that its presence in Kenya is solely for charitable purposes and that all operational information is transparently available on its website.
