The government has initiated efforts to renovate and improve the Deputy President’s official residence following the disclosure by the current occupant that the ‘Hustlers Mansion’ needs repairs.
As per the Controller of Budget’s Budget Implementation Review Report, approximately Ksh600 million is earmarked by the government for the enhancement.
According to the report presented by CoB Margaret Nyakang’o on Tuesday, Ksh100 million has already been expended on essential repairs for the residence. The construction of the residence initially incurred a cost of Ksh450 million, funded by
Further, Nyakang’o revealed that the construction work began in July last year.
In March of the previous year, Gachagua disclosed that he had not moved into the Karen residence because of a leaking roof and damaged equipment.

Gachagua further alleged that Ruto was forced to pay utility bills from his pocket.
“The official residence of the Deputy President was in bad shape when I became Deputy President. The rooftop was leaking, the borehole pump was broken down, and the house was totally in bad shape.
“Even if I would want to move into the DP’s residence, that place is inhabitable. I found Ruto staying in a house where the roof is leaking. They had even moved to a corner of the house together with the wife,” he alleged.
Nevertheless, by May 2023, it was reported that Gachagua had relocated to his designated Karen residence, where he has been conducting sub-Cabinet Committee meetings and interacting with diplomats.
The designated residence for the Deputy President is located on a 10-acre piece of land in the Karen suburb. It includes a two-story dwelling, an office, living quarters for staff, and a large swimming pool. Additionally, in 2019, Ruto constructed a church on the premises.
